Romaine Baptiste, Head of HR for International Operations at LOLC, is one such leader whose 24-year journey embodies the essence of commitment and professional growth.
Starting her career at LOLC as a temporary replacement straight out of school, Romaine’s journey began in 2000 when she took on a role as a receptionist. Her relentless drive and aptitude quickly became evident, leading to a permanent position and a significant transition into the HR department in 2002. Since then, she has steadily climbed the ranks to become the Head of HR for International Operations, a role she has excelled in, thanks to the dynamic and supportive culture at LOLC.
Romaine’s extensive career at LOLC highlights the diverse opportunities and experiences available within a global organization. With operations spanning multiple industries and markets, LOLC has provided Romaine with a rich tapestry of professional experiences. The company’s unique culture, which emphasizes both personal and professional growth, has played a pivotal role in her long-standing tenure. For Romaine, the ability to lead both HR and Operations, coupled with the freedom and support offered by the organization, has made her career deeply rewarding.
“LOLC has always been a place where you can grow, not just professionally but personally as well,” Romaine says. “The opportunities and support I’ve received here have been incredible.” Simultaneously, she also focused on advancing her education while being employed. She earned her foundation certificate and professional qualification with CIPM Sri Lanka and a Master’s Degree with distinction from Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Her educational pursuits have been more than just academic; they have translated into practical changes within LOLC. For instance, Romaine’s research in 2009 led to the successful introduction of flexible work arrangements, marking a significant shift from the rigid schedules of the time. “I’m proud of the changes we’ve implemented,” she reflects.
The opportunity to bring new ideas to the table and see them come to life has been incredibly rewarding.
Romaine’s role extends far beyond a single location. Managing HR operations across 25 countries is no small feat, and it’s a challenge that Romaine has embraced wholeheartedly. Her global experience has provided her with invaluable insights into different cultures, industries, and labor laws. “Working across such diverse regions has been a fantastic learning opportunity,” she explains.
“Adapting to varying skill levels and competency standards has allowed me to experiment with different approaches and build strong relationships.” The key to Romaine’s success in managing international HR operations lies in her deep understanding and respect for diverse value systems. By thoroughly studying each country’s culture and regulations, she has been able to foster strong relationships and gain the support of local teams.

Romaine also emphasizes the importance of effective communication, which includes clarity, active listening, and relationship-building. “Respect is fundamental,” she asserts. “It’s not something that can be bargained for; it must be earned through genuine interactions.”
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the race for rapid success. However, Romaine believes in the value of a balanced approach. “Just like a well-built house needs a strong foundation, a career needs steady growth and development,” she says. “Rushing through promotions without gaining the necessary experience can lead to challenges down the road.”
Romaine emphasizes that achieving happiness and satisfaction in life requires balance across work, personal life, and spiritual growth. “It’s all about investing time wisely and ensuring that no aspect of your life is neglected. After all, the goal is to build a fulfilling life both professionally and personally.”
Success often requires significant sacrifices, and Romaine’s journey is a prime example. Balancing the demands of a career with personal responsibilities, such as managing her studies with two children, demonstrates the level of commitment required to succeed. “Every successful person has invested a lot in their journey,” Romaine notes. “It’s about understanding that accomplishments don’t come easily and being prepared to put in the hard work.”
Finally, Romaine’s advice for long-term success is both practical and insightful. She advocates for having a solid plan, prioritizing effectively, and setting realistic goals. “Simplicity in life is key,” she suggests. “Avoid setting overly high expectations that might lead to dissatisfaction. Instead, focus on setting achievable goals and moving steadily toward them.”
Her philosophy is about creating a harmonious life, balancing career ambitions with personal well-being. “Invest time wisely in the right activities and ensure that you’re building a fulfilling life on all fronts,” Romaine concludes. “It’s about finding that balance and making the most of every opportunity.”
