At the heart of this harmonious workplace is Anji Ratwatte, the Head of Human Resources at Durdans Hospital. Anji’s journey to becoming a leading figure in HR is a story of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication.
Anji’s story begins at Ladies’ School, Colombo 7 where she first learned the importance of discipline and excellence. This early education paved the way for her to enter the University of Jayawardena, Management Faculty. But Anji didn’t stop there—her insatiable curiosity led her to also pursue an LLB degree (Hons – 2nd Class) from the University of London. Simultaneously completing her MBA (HR) from the University of Bedfordshire. Balancing two demanding fields of study was no small feat, but it was just the beginning of her impressive journey.
Her entry into the professional world was nothing short of remarkable. During her fourth year at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Anji interned at Brandix a leading apparel Company in Sri Lanka. Within just five days, her potential shone so brightly that she was offered a permanent role as a Trainee HR Executive as a permanent employee. This rapid transition was a clear indicator of the incredible career that lay ahead. Between 2008 and 2012, Anji worked as a Senior Executive in HR at the time she left Brandix honing her skills and gaining invaluable experience.
In 2012, she joined Cinnamon Grand as an Assistant Manager in HR. Her talent and strategic thinking quickly caught the attention of the Management, earning her a promotion to Human Resource Manager (Head of Department) in less than one year where she began her career in a managerial role in the profession of HR. “I cannot forget to appreciate the General Manager at that time, Mr. Rohan Karr a legendary name in the Hospitality industry gave me the promotion despite her being pregnant with my first baby giving priority and recognition to my capabilities which most of the Organizations fail to do having the level of commitment as a concern” This position however ascent highlighted her leadership capabilities and her knack for driving organizational success through innovative HR practices.
Anji took on HR role as a Senior Manager – HR at Hirdaramani another leading Company in the Apparel Industry, and later at Miami Clothing as Head of HR to overlook the HR function for 3,000 employees across two factories and the Corporate Office. Her leadership in these roles solidified her reputation as an HR powerhouse. Later her career continued to flourish to Hayleys Leisure PLC as Director HR to overlook the HR function for Kingsbury PLC a five star property in the Hospitality Industry where she served for more than four years, showcasing her versatility across different industries.
However, in June 2023, Anji embarked on a new adventure as the Head of HR at Durdans Group fearlessly willing to take up the challenge to over look HR for over 2000 employees in the Healthcare Industry. This role presented unique challenges and opportunities.
“HR in the Healthcare Industry was a new experience for me understanding the level of passion and love that one needs to have to help another to heal from one’s discomfort or being sick you can imagine the importance to taking care of our employee”
she said having a lot of respect for the role of those who serve in the Hospital. It is vital that we first empathize with our staff only then it will pass on to our patients,” she often says, highlighting the importance of emotional intelligence in healthcare HR. Anji’s role at Durdans allowed her to implement HR practices that prioritize empathy, adaptability, and continuous learning—essential elements in the high-stakes environment of healthcare.
Anji is acutely aware of the generational shifts in the workforce. “The current generation thinks and behaves differently. Understanding their mindset and responding appropriately is crucial,” she notes. Her ability to navigate these shifts has been instrumental in creating a supportive and engaging work environment at Durdans Hospital. She emphasizes the importance of a positive environment and culture in retaining and motivating employees, understanding that the key to effective HR management lies in adaptability and continuous engagement with the workforce.
A strong advocate for technological integration, Anji believes in the transformative power of automation and tech-savviness in HR. “Companies need to invest in knowledge and accommodate new ideas, whether they are immediately workable or not,” she asserts. Her forward-thinking approach encourages continuous learning and creativity, especially among the younger generation. Anji’s commitment to embracing innovation has positioned her as a leader who not only adapts to changes but also drives them, ensuring that the HR practices at Durdans Hospital remain at the forefront of industry standards.
Furthermore, reflecting on the HR landscape in Sri Lanka, Anji acknowledges the slow adoption of modern HR practices but remains optimistic about the future. “The struggle organizations face in adapting to generational changes and the increasing demand for independence among younger employees is real,” she observes. However, she believes that with the right strategies and a commitment to continuous improvement, organizations can successfully navigate these challenges.
In conclusion, giving her invaluable advice to those entering the HR profession, she notes that, “ It is important to identify where you gain your foundation, additionally HR is not a job should be one that leads your heart to and where you have a passion for others. It is also important that we know when you are in HR you are “your HR” hence self motivation is key this comes with passion and love towards serving others”. Anji also highlighted her biggest achievement in her career is where those who have started their internship with her are now leaders and managers of leading Companies and she also didn’t fail to add that she will continue to mold and grow young professionals in the field of HR.
