Aberdeen Holdings Marks World Environment Day with Group-Wide Sustainability Initiatives

In commemoration of World Environment Day, Aberdeen Holdings, one of Sri Lanka’s leading diversified conglomerates, carried out a series of sustainability-focused initiatives across its companies, reaffirming the Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility, community engagement, and sustainable development in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Bringing together companies from different sectors of the Group, the initiatives reflected Aberdeen’s broader approach to ESG, where environmental responsibility is encouraged through practical action, employee participation, community involvement, and long-term sustainability-focused programmes.

The Group’s efforts addressed several key areas, including coastal conservation, sustainable agriculture, responsible waste management, and recycling awareness. Each initiative, while led by individual companies, contributed to a shared objective of creating meaningful environmental impact across the communities and industries in which Aberdeen operates.

As part of this collective effort, Expack Corrugated Cartons PLC, a leading corrugated carton manufacturer and sustainable packaging solutions provider, mobilised its teams for a coastal clean-up initiative covering approximately 1,350 square metres. The initiative resulted in the removal of 656 kg of waste, demonstrating the positive impact of teamwork and shared responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.

Strengthening the Group’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, Tropikal Global carried out Phase 2 of its King Coconut Seedling Initiative in Kosgama, distributing seedlings to farmers and suppliers within the local community. With more than 500 seedlings already distributed and a further 1,000 underway, the initiative supports the long-term cultivation and preservation of Sri Lanka’s distinctive King Coconut while contributing to the livelihoods of the communities that nurture it.

Further supporting Aberdeen’s commitment to responsible waste management and environmental education, Neptune Recyclers continued its EduCycle programme by conducting educational sessions on plastic recycling, responsible waste management, and circular economy thinking. The sessions, held at the National College of Education in Mirigama and The British School in Colombo, engaged both students and teachers, encouraging more responsible approaches to waste and recycling.
