Global Entrepreneurship Week is an annual event series held in more than 180 countries, bringing together over 40,000 participants and 20,000 partners worldwide. It is a dynamic platform that unites some of the greatest entrepreneurial minds to create, innovate, and educate. This year’s event promises to be more significant than ever, as entrepreneurship plays a vital role in revitalizing economies and advancing sustainability initiatives.
Countries around the world organize national campaigns that collectively host around 35,000 activities, events, and competitions each year during the month of November. The focus of this event series is to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among the younger generation, encouraging early engagement with innovation and business development.
The Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) is proud to have organized Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) for two consecutive years and will host it for the third time from November 18th to 24th, 2024. In its debut year in 2022, Sri Lanka achieved a top ten ranking on the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) leaderboard, demonstrating its impactful participation in the global entrepreneurial landscape.
In 2023, GEW Sri Lanka, themed “Entrepreneurs Thrive Here,” engaged over 10,000 participants across 160 events in 20 districts, emphasizing areas such as ecosystems, education, inclusion, and policy. The official launch featured prominent figures like Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries, and Mahesha Amarasuriya from Mastercard Sri Lanka, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the event.
The success of GEW underscores the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Sri Lanka, where innovation is continually nurtured. As ICTA prepares for the upcoming event, it aims to build on last year’s achievements by introducing new initiatives and partnerships to further engage the community. Sri Lanka’s continued success at GEW, including recognition at the GEN Compass Awards, highlights ICTA’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship for a prosperous future.
Entrepreneurship events have the power to transform Sri Lanka’s economy by stimulating growth, fostering innovation, and creating valuable networks among entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts. These gatherings not only enhance skills development and attract investment but also promote inclusivity by empowering underrepresented groups. Through these events, we raise awareness about entrepreneurship and facilitate discussions on supportive policies, contributing to a vibrant ecosystem. By showcasing local culture, these gatherings also boost tourism and position Sri Lanka as a hub for creative solutions, ultimately driving economic development and prosperity for all.
