RUN FOR HOPE: A National Movement Empowering Sri Lanka’s Single Mothers
In every corner of Sri Lanka, there are mothers carrying responsibilities far beyond what most people will ever experience. They are raising children alone, struggling to provide food, education, shelter, and security while overcoming financial hardship, social stigma, and limited opportunities.
Yet despite these challenges, they continue to persevere with remarkable strength and determination.
For the past decade, Voice Foundation Sri Lanka, a government-registered non-governmental organization, has been standing alongside these women, offering support, protection, and opportunities to help them rebuild their lives. Guided by its vision of creating “A Better Sri Lanka with Better Sri Lankans,” the organization has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of vulnerable mothers and children across the country.
Today, that mission is gaining national attention through RUN FOR HOPE, a growing charity movement that is transforming a simple community run into a powerful platform for social change.
A Decade of Transforming Lives
Since its establishment, Voice Foundation Sri Lanka has worked tirelessly to address some of the most pressing social challenges faced by vulnerable women and children.
At the heart of its work is the VOICE Safe House, a shelter and support initiative that has provided care, protection, guidance, and opportunities to more than 400 mothers and their children over the years.
Many of these women have faced abandonment, domestic violence, financial instability, and social isolation. Through counseling, emergency assistance, education support, vocational development, and community-based interventions, the organization has helped them regain confidence and move toward independence.
The Reality Faced by Single Mothers
The challenges facing single mothers in Sri Lanka are often invisible to the wider public.
For many women, securing employment is not the primary problem. The real challenge lies in finding a safe and affordable place to leave their children while they work.
Without access to childcare facilities or family support, many mothers are forced to remain unemployed despite being willing and capable of working. Others leave their children in unsafe environments or under inadequate supervision simply because they have no alternative.
A Vision for Mahiyanganaya
To create long-term change, Voice Foundation Sri Lanka is now working toward establishing an Empowerment and Training Centre in Mahiyanganaya.
The proposed facility will serve as a hub for vocational training, entrepreneurship development, life skills education, and income-generation opportunities for vulnerable women and single mothers.
RUN FOR HOPE: More Than a Charity Run
To support this vision, Voice Foundation Sri Lanka launched RUN FOR HOPE, a community-driven charity initiative designed to unite people behind a common cause.
The inaugural event in Kandy attracted more than 400 runners. The movement later expanded to Negombo and is now preparing for its largest event yet.
Colombo Prepares for the Largest Edition Yet
RUN FOR HOPE COLOMBO 2026 will take place on 1 August 2026 at Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo.
Organizers expect more than 1,000 participants, making it the largest event in the movement’s history.
Funds raised through the event will directly support Voice Foundation’s ongoing programs and contribute toward the development of the proposed Empowerment and Training Centre in Mahiyanganaya.
A Call for National Support
Voice Foundation Sri Lanka invites individuals, corporate organizations, educational institutions, media partners, and community groups to support RUN FOR HOPE COLOMBO 2026.
Because when a mother is empowered, a child gains opportunity. When a child gains opportunity, a family gains stability. And when families gain stability, Sri Lanka gains a stronger future.
Registration for RUN FOR HOPE COLOMBO 2026 is now open. The public is invited to join the movement and run for the mothers of our nation.
