In the competitive world of recruitment, the “early adopter” advantage belongs to those who embrace technology that candidates actually want to use. When XpressJobs launched Sri Lanka’s first AI-powered Recruitment Assistant on WhatsApp, they didn’t just create a tool; they redefined the candidate experience. By meeting talent on the platform they use most, XpressJobs has turned a traditionally slow process into an instant, interactive conversation.

The Innovation Leaders: Pioneering with John Keells & BYD

The debut of the AI Assistant carried significant weight, as it was integrated into the recruitment ecosystems of John Keells Holdings (JKH) and BYD Sri Lanka.

  • The JKH Launch: As Sri Lanka’s largest listed conglomerate, JKH required a solution that could scale across its diverse portfolio. The AI Assistant proved it could handle everything from retail staff for Keells Supermarkets to specialized logistics roles, reaching out to candidates on WhatsApp to “pitch” roles and answer questions in real-time.
  • The BYD Partnership: In the high-stakes world of Electric Vehicles (EV), BYD Sri Lanka used the AI to engage with a forward-thinking, tech-savvy talent pool that values innovation and instant response.

98% Open Rates: Capturing the Gen Z Audience

Traditional recruitment methods often suffer from low engagement, but the shift to WhatsApp has produced staggering results. Data from recent campaigns shows:

  • Unprecedented Engagement: For every 1,000 candidates reached, the AI Assistant maintains a 98% open rate.
  • Deep Interaction: Approximately 800 out of every 1,000 candidates engage with the AI through at least 10 conversational exchanges, answering questions and exploring role details.

Breaking Language Barriers: High-Volume Hiring at Daraz & Hemas

The versatility of the AI Assistant is most evident in its ability to support Sinhala and Tamil, making it the first truly inclusive AI recruiter in Sri Lanka.

  • Daraz 11.11 & 12.12 Campaigns: To meet massive seasonal demand, Daraz utilized the AI to hire delivery drivers at scale. By conversing in the candidate’s preferred local language, the AI removed the “language barrier” friction, allowing for rapid, high-volume onboarding.
  • Hemas Consumer Internship Program: Hemas integrated the AI into their prestigious internship intake. The AI guided students through the various stages of filtering and provided clarity on the online quiz passing criteria, ensuring that the brightest young minds in the country had a seamless entry into the corporate world
  • The 24/7 Advantage: Unlike human recruitment teams, the AI is available in the middle of the night. Gen Z candidates, who often browse for roles after hours, can discuss filtering stages, inquire about online quiz passing marks, and complete their screening at 2:00 AM without waiting for “office hours.”

Diverse Industry Adoption: HCLTech and Siyapatha Finance

Since its launch, a wide array of industries has adopted this “proactive” approach to hiring:

  • HCLTech Sri Lanka: Leverages the AI to hire Software Engineers, QA Analysts, and trainees for their TechBee program, proving that AI can handle complex technical screening as easily as general roles.
  • Siyapatha Finance: Uses the assistant to hunt for “on-the-move” candidates for Field Sales and Leasing positions, ensuring their nationwide branches are always fully staffed.

The Verdict: From Gatekeepers to Growth Drivers

The success of the XpressJobs AI Assistant lies in its accessibility. Whether it is a driver in a rural province replying in Sinhala or a Tech Lead in Colombo discussing a 24/7 support role, the experience is friendly, personalized, and efficient.

For Sri Lankan HR professionals, this technology represents a shift from being “gatekeepers” to being “growth drivers.” By automating the outreach and the initial 10-step screening process, HR teams can focus on the final human selection, knowing the AI has already secured the highest-quality, most engaged talent in the market.
