It all began with a simple question: What if a wellness retreat could be both research-based and ridiculously fun?
On a quiet weekend in Negombo, a group of participants gathered for Sri Lanka’s first immersive lifestyle medicine retreat—designed through a collaboration between Sajeevan Lifestyle Medicine and Fitness Formula by Dilky. What unfolded was not just another lecture on health, nor a boot camp of grueling workouts. It was something altogether different: a carefully curated experience that blended science, movement, and joy to help people feel what living well truly means.
Dr. Rasarie Wimalana, the founder of Sajeevan, is a Western medicine doctor with a background in lifestyle medicine and psychology, and brings evidence-based strategies for managing chronic lifestyle diseases. Dilky Nanayakkara, an internationally certified fitness instructor, contributes rhythm, energy, and joyful movement.
Together, they created a rare space where participants didn’t just absorb information—they felt a sense of freedom, belonging, and empowerment.
Health information is confusing—scroll through social media and you’ll find contradictory advice everywhere: keto vs. vegan, HIIT vs. yoga, miracle supplements vs. fasting trends. It’s overwhelming. The retreat cut through this noise with an approach based on six pillars of lifestyle medicine: a growing branch of Western medicine that uses lifestyle interventions to prevent and treat chronic disease. These pillars include nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, emotional well-being, managing risky substances, positive connections, and life purpose.

These aren’t just wellness buzzwords. They are proven, evidence-based principles. This retreat wasn’t about chasing perfection or keeping up with trends, either. Instead, it encouraged participants to slow down, clarify, apply, and connect—redefining health as something sustainable, enjoyable, and deeply personal.
The program was hands-on and heart-centered. Workbooks guided participants to reflect on their choices: Does this habit nourish or deplete me? Group sessions sparked discussions about real struggles and practical solutions. Throughout the two days, wholesome meals nourished participants, demonstrating the pleasure of health-promoting foods. Movement classes energized the body, while mindful moments brought clarity to the mind.
Instead of rigid rules, the retreat offered flexibility and kindness. Laughter flowed as freely as knowledge. By the end, participants walked away not just with new information, but with renewed motivation—and the tools to sustain change long after the weekend ended.
What made this retreat so different was its balance. It was credible, backed by science and medical expertise, but also joyful, full of music, movement, and human connection.
As one participant put it: “I didn’t just learn about lifestyle medicine. I lived it.”
