Celebrating 100 Years of Quantum Science in Sri Lanka with A/L Science Students
As the world marks a century of quantum discoveries, Sri Lanka rises to the occasion with a celebration unlike any before. The 100th Year Celebration of Quantum Science & Technology, organized by the Future Lanka Research & Development Foundation in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, sets a powerful stage to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators. Centered around the theme “Employability in the Quantum Era,” this islandwide initiative is specifically tailored for A/L Science and Mathematics students, offering a deep dive into the future of work, knowledge, and technology.
Quantum science is no longer a distant or abstract field—it is the invisible force already transforming our everyday lives. From the way we secure our data and power our devices, to the evolution of artificial intelligence and the materials we use to build our world, quantum advancements are shifting the ground beneath us. In this context, Sri Lanka’s celebration is not only a commemoration of the past but a call to action for the future. The initiative brings this message to life through a series of impactful experiences designed to bridge students with real-world applications of quantum technologies, while unlocking the doors to emerging career pathways in science, engineering, and innovation.
At the core of the celebration are five regional conference sessions that will take place in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, and Jaffna—each engaging hundreds of A/L Science students in interactive discussions and expert-led sessions. Adding to the educational richness of the initiative is a 50-episode expert video series, where professionals from across academia and industry share key insights on how quantum science is rapidly transforming global industries, and what skills students need to succeed in this changing landscape.
However, the heartbeat of this national effort lies in the All-Island Quantum Century Debate Championship—a groundbreaking interschool competition that reinvents the traditional debate format into a platform for scientific exploration and futuristic thinking. Designed for A/L Science and Mathematics students, the debate aims to spark critical conversations around the role of quantum science in society, the economy, and beyond. Conducted in both Sinhala and English, the championship encourages students to analyze, question, and articulate how quantum developments could shape their lives and careers in the decades ahead. A special briefing and strategy session, scheduled for the 20th of June 2025 at the Virtusa Sri Lanka Auditorium in Orion City, will guide students through the foundational knowledge and themes of the championship, ensuring they are empowered not only to debate, but to lead.
What makes this celebration truly powerful is the collaboration it has fostered across sectors. The project is carried out under the guidance of the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), the Department of Manpower and Employment, and the National Human Resources Council (NHRC), reinforcing its alignment with national goals for human capital development. The initiative is further supported by a broad network of private and public entities who share the vision of preparing Sri Lanka’s youth for the demands of the future. SLTC, SLIIT, Curtin Colombo, and SLIIT City Campus serve as platinum sponsors, while ACCA and Trico Maritime Pvt Ltd join as gold sponsors. Bronze sponsors include the International Education & Scholarship Center (ISEC), Australasian Academy, and Sponge Global Pvt Ltd. Media backing comes from Swarnavahini, Siyatha TV, Fox FM, and EduTimes, with Virtusa Sri Lanka acting as the event’s tech partner and TRACE as the innovation partner. XpressJobs plays a pivotal role as the industry bridge, helping connect students with the evolving needs of the workforce.
In celebrating the past 100 years of quantum science, this initiative plants the seeds for Sri Lanka’s future—one where young mind are not just observers of scientific progress but active participants and leaders. Through bold conversation, hands-on learning, and cross-sector collaboration, the nation takes a confident step toward nurturing a generation that is not only STEM-ready, but quantum-ready.
