Q: Samudhi Trading Company has built a strong presence in Sri Lanka through its partnership with AMARON. What has contributed to the company’s success?

Our journey with AMARON began in 2005, and over the years, we have worked to establish the brand as a trusted name in Sri Lanka’s automotive battery market. While product quality and reliability are important, we believe our success is equally connected to our people, relationships and commitment to customers.

As the sole importer and distributor of AMARON automotive batteries in Sri Lanka, we recognise the importance of delivering dependable products that meet the needs of vehicle owners, automotive workshops and dealers.

We recognise that sustainable growth requires understand that the automotive sector continues to evolve, with changing vehicle technologies and customer expectations. Our ability to adapt, strengthen our partnerships and remain focused on quality and service has been instrumental in our continued growth. Our employees play a vital role in ensuring product availability, providing accurate product information and maintaining high service standards.

Q: Employee retention is a challenge for many organisations. What has been your experience at Samudhi Trading Company?

One of our greatest strengths is the loyalty and experience of our workforce. Most of our employees have been with us for between 10 and 15 years, reflecting the long-standing relationships we have built with our people.

Experience is particularly valuable in the automotive battery industry, where product knowledge, customer relationships and an understanding of market requirements develop over time. This experience helps us maintain consistency across our operations, from coordinating product distribution to supporting dealers and responding to customer enquiries. It also allows us to manage changing market conditions with greater confidence and efficiency.

We believe retaining experienced employees is just as important as attracting new talent. Long-serving employees preserve valuable organisational knowledge, mentor newer colleagues and contribute to stronger relationships with our business partners.

Ultimately, employee retention is about creating an environment in which people feel valued, supported and motivated to contribute to the company’s long-term success.

Q: What qualities do you look for when recruiting new employees?

We believe recruitment should look beyond academic qualifications and previous work experience. Technical knowledge is important, but integrity, adaptability and a willingness to learn are equally valuable.

The automotive battery industry requires employees to understand products, customer needs and the practical demands of a competitive market. Depending on their roles, employees may need to develop knowledge of battery specifications, vehicle compatibility, product handling, inventory management, sales processes and after-sales support.

We also value individuals who take initiative, solve problems and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and suggest practical improvements.

Our experienced workforce provides a strong foundation for welcoming new talent. New employees bring fresh perspectives, while experienced colleagues contribute practical knowledge. This combination is important as the automotive sector continues to evolve.

For job seekers, our advice is to develop both technical and interpersonal skills and demonstrate a customer-focused mindset.

Q: How important are professional development and continuous learning?

Professional development and continuous learning are essential in the automotive battery industry because product technologies, vehicle requirements and customer expectations continue to change.

Employees need to understand the characteristics and applications of different battery types, their specifications, maintenance requirements and compatibility with various vehicles. As vehicle technology advances, keeping this knowledge up to date becomes increasingly important.

Beyond technical knowledge, employees also benefit from training in sales, customer relationship management, inventory planning, logistics, communication and problem-solving. Learning should not be limited to formal training programmes. Practical experience, mentoring, product briefings and knowledge-sharing among colleagues are equally valuable.

We also recognise that professional development is a shared responsibility. Organisations should provide opportunities for employees to grow, while individuals must remain curious, open to feedback and willing to adapt to new developments.

Q: What role does leadership play in creating a positive workplace culture?

Effective leadership involves providing direction, setting clear expectations and creating an environment in which employees understand their responsibilities and feel encouraged to contribute.

Good leaders listen to employees, consider different perspectives and recognise opportunities for improvement. They also ensure that accountability and support go hand in hand, helping employees understand performance expectations while providing appropriate guidance.

We believe leadership should be demonstrated through actions rather than titles alone. Integrity, consistency, fairness and a willingness to take responsibility help establish trust within an organisation.

A positive workplace culture develops when these values are reflected in everyday decisions and interactions. We believe mutual respect, trust and a shared sense of purpose are important to building lasting relationships with employees.

Q: How can organisations improve employee performance while maintaining strong teamwork?

Leadership plays a critical role in building a workplace culture that supports accountability, collaboration and consistent performance.

In the automotive battery industry, our success depends on effective coordination across sales, distribution, inventory management, customer service and other business functions.

Effective leadership involves setting clear expectations, providing guidance and creating an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing ideas and raising concerns. Regular feedback helps employees understand their strengths and identify areas for development.

We also believe employees should be encouraged to suggest improvements to existing processes. Small changes in communication, reporting and coordination can make a meaningful difference to productivity.

In our business, sales, finance, administration, logistics and customer support must work together effectively. A balance of individual ownership and collective effort helps build a more efficient, responsive and customer-focused organisation.

Q: How does employee experience influence customer satisfaction?

Customer satisfaction in the automotive battery industry depends on product quality, availability, reliability, accurate product information and effective after-sales support. Delivering these consistently requires coordination throughout the organisation.

Our relationships with dealers and business partners are an important part of our operations. Our reputation depends not only on the products we distribute but also on how effectively we respond to customer needs.

Employees who have worked with us for many years bring valuable familiarity with our products, processes and customer relationships. This experience helps them understand customer expectations and contribute to practical solutions.

In this industry, timely communication, dependable product availability and consistent service can make a significant difference to the customer experience. Achieving these standards requires every department to work together, from sales and inventory management to distribution and customer support.

Q: What advice would you give to young Sri Lankans starting their careers?

Our advice is to focus on building a strong professional foundation by combining knowledge, practical skills and the right attitude. Qualifications are valuable, but practical skills, integrity, communication and the ability to work with others are essential for long term success.

For those interested in the automotive sector, there are opportunities across sales, marketing, technical support, logistics, supply chain management and customer service. Developing an understanding of products, market requirements and customer expectations can provide a valuable foundation for a career in this industry.

Career development is not always about moving quickly between positions. Taking time to build expertise, understand an organisation and develop professional relationships can create valuable opportunities over time.

As technology and business practices continue to evolve, adaptability and continuous learning will become increasingly important, particularly in the automotive industry. Sri Lanka has considerable talent and potential, and we believe that individuals who combine competence with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn can build rewarding careers.

Q: What are Samudhi Trading Company’s priorities for the future?

Our priorities are to strengthen our position in Sri Lanka’s automotive market, maintain the trust of our customers and business partners, and continue adapting to the changing needs of the industry.

Our partnership with AMARON, which began in 2005, reflects the importance of consistency, collaboration and long-term commitment. Building on this foundation, we aim to continue strengthening our dealer network, improving operational efficiency and maintaining the standards of product quality and service that customers expect.

Our people will remain central to this journey. The fact that most of our employees have been with us for between 10 and 15 years is a source of pride. Their experience provides continuity, while the ideas and energy of new talent can help prepare us for the future.

Ultimately, business success is measured not only by financial performance but also by the strength of relationships, the quality of service and the value created for customers, employees and the wider community.

At Samudhi Group, we believe believe sustainable growth requires a long-term perspective. Beyond financial performance, success is reflected in customer satisfaction, strong dealer relationships, reliable distribution and the development of a capable and committed workforce.
