In the absence of human capital, any organization is merely a structure. The survival of the company stems from its workforce.  Human capital development is crucial for the economic growth of any country. Investing in education and skills training enhances the productivity and effectiveness of the workforce, driving innovation and economic progress. Given the prevailing landscape in many countries, including Sri Lanka, where the brain drain is increasing, it is indispensable to prioritize retaining or developing human capital within the country. Human capital refers to the aggregation of knowledge, skills, competencies, technical know-how, attitude, behaviour, talents, intelligence, and creativity embodied in the ability to produce economic value possessed by individuals or groups. This becomes an asset for an organization and is not listed in the company’s balance sheet.

At the workplace, investing in employees to unlock their potential is a strategic approach. In a globalized economy, a skilled and adaptable workforce is essential for competing internationally. Investment in human capital helps Sri Lankan organizations stay competitive, attract foreign investment, and expand into new markets. Continuous learning and development enable employees to adapt to technological advancements and changing market demands. This fosters a culture of innovation, allowing businesses to stay ahead of trends and embrace new opportunities.

An organization thrives on excellence and strives for Innovation through its DNA, human capital

The development of human capital can take various forms, as follows:

  1. Employee Education and Awareness can be provided through formal education, vocational training, workshops, seminars, conferences, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and corporate clubs such as Toastmasters and Rotaract to enhance employees’ knowledge, skills and attitudes. The organization can sponsor its employees to get diplomas, degrees or additional certifications. Leading companies provide ample opportunities for learning and professional development within the work itself.
  1. Skill Development Initiatives are more effective for employees to build specific competencies. This can be done through on-the-job or off-the-job training, mentoring sessions, soft skills-building sessions, leadership training, peer-to-peer learning platforms, professional assistance sessions, buddy training, self-study methods, and employee education programs. These may be helpful to enhance upskilling, cross-skilling and reskilling.
  1. Knowledge Transfer and Exposure elucidate doubts and clarifications about employee job-related and, perhaps, personal matters. Employees can gain insights from the successes, challenges, and lessons learned by others, which can help them navigate similar situations in their roles. When exposed to a winning group of employees, they gain an optimistic mindset and develop independently. Exposure to different industries, cultures, and business practices through experience sharing can broaden an individual’s outlook and enhance their ability to think critically and innovate. Experience sharing helps transfer tacit knowledge that might not be captured in formal training programs, ensuring that valuable insights and practices are preserved and disseminated.
  1. Micro-team Discussions open the gateway to facilitate the division of labour into specialized niches.  Through discussions in smaller teams, the exchange of ideas, experiences, and expertise among participants leads to collective learning and knowledge acquisition speeds up. Engaging in discussions on specific topics or challenges encourages critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among participants. Group discussions allow emerging leaders to take the initiative, facilitate discussions and feedback, and guide the group towards achieving objectives. Group discussions often create networking opportunities, allowing participants to build professional relationships and expand their professional networks.
  1. A Diversified Learning Atmosphere surrounded by a learning organizational culture brings various competencies and viewpoints to the table. Continuous improvement can be fostered when the organizational DNA is embedded with diversity, equity, and inclusion. Varied approaches ensure that employees engage with the learning material in ways that resonate best with their individual styles. When learning becomes an integral part of the organizational ethos, employees are more inclined to engage in skill enhancement actively, driving growth and innovation across the board.

Companies prioritizing human capital development are more attractive to top talent. By offering opportunities for growth and development, organizations can attract and retain skilled employees, reducing turnover and maintaining a competitive edge. A well-educated and skilled workforce can contribute to social stability by reducing income inequality and promoting social mobility. Further, a well-developed workforce is more resilient in economic challenges and disruptions. Employees with diverse skills and knowledge can adapt more readily to changes, ensuring business continuity and stability.
